Driver education is taught at an early stage at Milltown Primary School.
For the fourth straight year, the highly popular Scooter Town project is held in the gymnasium by Milltown’s two devoted Health and Physical Education Teachers, Bryan Smith and Shannon Chartowich.
The two educators explained this novel project that is performed during Health and Physical Education classes.
“The students at Milltown are participating in our Scooter Town. Students learn community health and safety while driving their scooters around our town, enjoying activities in different stores like Quick Check, Tim Hortons, Yestercades, and Top Golf,” Mr. Smith and Ms Chartowich said.
They continued.
“ Students even learn to navigate the Somerville Circle, use crosswalks, and learn about first responders and community helpers like doctors, police, and firefighters.”
“They learn the rules of the road and then they start building their own stores. We start the seed and then they grow it.”
Parents who attend the after-school BRCAREs program are impressed with the layout of various stores, paths and buildings that are spread across the gym floor.
“Parents are into it,” Mr. Smith said.
The two teachers concluded:
“This is the number one fan-favorite activity here at Milltown School and it keeps getting better every year. They are always asking when will we be holding it at the start of each year.”
