Crim counselor holds peace pledge sign

Crim Primary School students pledge to peace each morning during the Week of Respect.

The Bridgewater-Raritan Regional SchoolDistrictc, as well as all public schools in New Jersey, have recognized the Week of Respect from Monday, October 7,7 through Friday, October 11.

The Week of Respect is in accordance with the Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Act, a New Jersey law that was signed into effect in 2011 to combat bullying in public schools.

The law requires that New Jersey public schools acknowledge the importance of social and emotional learning while emphasizing age-appropriate instruction that will focus on preventing harassment, intimidation, and bullying (HIB).

Jacquelyn Spagnolo, the Crim Primary School Counselor, explained the commitment that her school will address all during the Week of Respect.

“Each morning during announcements students will recite a peace pledge and listen to daily reminders about how to show respect in their lives,” Ms. Spagnolo said.

She went on to stress the importance of this week.

“Students learn that respect means thinking about how others want to be treated and treating them that way. They are reminded that thinking about how they want to be treated helps them think about how to treat others.”

She also reported that “Staff and students are encouraged to celebrate the week by participating in daily theme days. Students will culminate the week by participating in a Mix-It-Up at lunch day.”

On this Monday, October 7, Crim staff and students wore pink to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Ms. Spagnolo also held up the school’s peace pledge sign and told the students that they would sign the poster board this week.
