The Bridgewater-Raritan High School boys’ basketball team launched the New Year with a big victory on Saturday afternoon, January 4.
On a day that saw three players for Bridgewater-Raritan (5-3) reach double figures and 11 total players score, the Panthers scored the game’s first 11 points and never trailed against BelovED Community Charter School (4-3) on the way to a 75-46 victory at the Vaughn Stapleton Gymnasium in Bridgewater.
Sophomore Tyler Hamby (nine points, three rebounds) threw down a dunk off of the game's opening tip and collected all nine of his points for the Panthers in the first quarter.
Senior Bobby Gillespie (11 points, five rebounds) also produced three of his five field goals in the first quarter, while classmate Ramses Binns (five points, rebounds) delivered two of his three field goals in this period, which saw Bridgewater-Raritan ended with a 25-10 lead and had five different players score alone.
Junior Richie Gardner (13 points, nine rebounds) was the game’s leading scorer and rebounder for Bridgewater-Raritan against the visiting school from Jersey City.
Bridgewater-Raritan (5-3) will next serve as host to Skyland Conference Valley Division leader Somerville High School (6-1) at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 7, in Bridgewater.
This will be the tail end of a basketball home doubleheader for the Panthers, and this game immediately follows the 5:30 p.m. girls’ contest against Delaware Valley Regional High School.
